Valentine's Day is making me sick!
Feb. 8th, 2007 12:14 pmI made the mistake of venturing into a mall yesterday and whew! Nearly every store had a sign up stating "Don't forget! Valentine's Day, February 14th" or something to that effect.
Um, really? It's the same day as it is every year? I'm shocked!
I liked Valentine's Day in elementary school, when you decorated your shoebox-with-a-slit and everyone gave little cards with sappy messages and cartoon characters, and maybe some candy, and there was a party. That was nice.
Or even when I got older and it was little packages from your best friends, that was nice too. Sure the popular kids one-upped you by giving each other flowers and balloons and carrying them around the halls, but a bag of pink and white M&Ms was plenty.
Then in high school it finally became more about the "relationships", but even then it wasn't so bad. I got my plush dragon and I was beyond thrilled.
But now, the expectation! It seems like the older you get the more commercial and expensive it becomes. I guess in a way it's nice to be single and not have that sort of expectation to fulfil. But when it starts in January with the ads for jewelry and every store in the mall has signs up it's just a little... yuck.
