I'm on the train on the way down to Salem, and furiously knitting as usual. :) I'll be back up in Seattle the evening of the 27th.

Yesterday was a crazy shopping day with [livejournal.com profile] hibrian. I got a sweatshirt (just like his) that I've been wanting since my Thanksgiving trip - but now it's on sale! I returned some books to Robb, got a present for Gina (and one from Brian), and ate Mexican food. What a day!

I made a hat for the lovely [livejournal.com profile] hibrian, and there it is. He approves of CTHGSY too.

Everyone says the holidays are great - you get to see family, spirt of giving, and all that. (We'll ignore, for a moment, the fact that a lot of people are not overly fond of seeing their families.)

But the holidays have a darker side. By virtue of the fact that you're spending time with family and all that jazz, it makes the absence of those you love all the more obvious.

The holidays are the times where you look back on memories of holidays past - perhaps with friends or relatives who are no longer alive. I think it's captured quite well in Red Water (Christmas Mourning) by Type O Negative.

In addition, there are those who are still alive, but no longer part of your life. Relatives gone because of divorce or family problems, friends you're no longer in touch with...

For me, this year, the ones who aren't here are outweighing the ones who are.
